Four episodes down and a month in, The Great Indian Kapil Show is witnessing a decline in viewership, according to Netflix's own data. Designed as an attempt to attract a new audience for the streamer in India, the show was promoted for several months, with the hook being the long-awaited reunion of host Kapil Sharma and his colleague, Sunil Grover. But after a grand launch and a guest list that has so far included the likes of Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Diljit Dosanjh and Rohit Sharma, viewership appears to be in freefall.

The debut episode, featuring Ranbir, his mother Neetu Kapoor and sister Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, attracted 2.4 million viewership hours according to Netflix's Global Top 10 list, which is updated weekly. The show finished at the number three spot for the week, garnering a total of 2.5 million views. By the end of the second week, with another episode having been released, total viewership hours for the show stood at 4.6 million. Total views, on the other hand, stood at 2.6 million. While 200,000 more people tuned in to watch the show, they now had two episodes to choose from. The show slipped to the number five spot in week two. Total views reflect the number of people who've watched an episode till the point that Netflix considers a single 'view', while total viewership hours may differ, since not every audience member is watching from start to finish.

By the end of week three, The Great Indian Kapil Show had slipped further down the rankings to the number seven spot. Total viewership hours stood at 4.1 million for the week, while total views stood at 1.7 million. Keep in mind, audiences now had three episodes to watch. And by the end of its first month, the show's total weekly viewership hours had fallen to 3.9 million, while it had slipped to the number 8 spot with just 1.2 million total views. Once again, audiences now had more than three hours of total content available to them, as opposed to the 57 minutes that were available to watch in week one. And yet, viewership by exactly 50% despite the addition of three further episodes. That being said, The Great Indian Kapil Show has remained the number one series in India every week since its debut.

This isn't Kapil's first project for Netflix. In 2022, he starred in his debut stand-up special, titled Kapil Sharma: I'm Not Done Yet. The hour-long special failed to crack the global top 10 in its run. By comparison, the series Maamla Legal Hai debuted with 4.8 million hours viewed, and 1.1 million total views. In week two, it jumped by one position and racked up a total of 8.5 million viewership hours and a total of 2 million views. On YouTube, full episodes of The Kapil Sharma Show were known to hit astronomical figures. For instance, SET India's upload of May 16, 2016's episode has racked up 52 million views. An episode featuring comedians Zakir Khan, Abhishek Upmanyu and Anubhav Singh Bassi has accumulated 19 million views. An episode featuring Ranbir, posted five months ago, has over 5 million views.

This week, Kapil will host actor Aamir Khan on The Great Indian Kapil Show. A trailer for the episode, posted on Tuesday, has accumulated 1.2 million views on YouTube so far.
